A Peaceful Passing

The family Steve Terlecki is saddened to share news of the passing of Steve who died peacefully on March 4th, 2022, having fought pancreatic cancer most of the past year.

An Avid Outdoorsman

After moving to Colorado in late 1978, he and wife Barbara, started a family, and enjoyed living in Colorado to the fullest. Steve was always active playing hockey, hiking, backpacking, elk hunting or skiing. He summitted all of Colorado’s 14’ners, hiked the full length of the Colorado trail and did numerous cross-country ski and snowshoe trips into the back country.

Hockey for Life Until the End

When not outdoors, he could be found at a local ice rink playing hockey with the “old guys” throwing in regular advice (frequently called coaching). Steve started playing hockey on the outdoor ponds around his home in Chicago. In college and when moving to a new city, he always found drop-ins or teams to play with, usually 2-3 nights a week.  The sport, the comradery including the post-game beer drinking were cherished by him. Only his illness stopped him from playing. The last teams he skated for were Last Gasp, Inferno, and GeriHatricks.  His hockey friends were his rock, frequently stopping by to support him in his last days and weeks.

A Geologist by Training

Steve was a petroleum geologist by training and worked for or consulted with many companies in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. Geology had been his calling from a young age. He volunteered to share his knowledge with kids at local schools and boy scouts, spending time in the summers at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch as a Geology counselor.

Great Joy in Family

Steve found great joy in family, especially the grand kids. He loved to brag about their adventures and achievements. Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Meredith and Jessica, son Ted, five grandchildren and sister Mary. Services will be held Tuesday, March 29th at 2:00 pm at Horan & McConaty, 3101 South Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80227.
